Activity: Counting pirates’ treasure

Learning opportunity: Counting to ten and finding one more and one less.

Early Learning Goal: Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy. Children should say and use number names in order in familiar contexts. They should count reliably up to ten everyday objects. They should find one more or one less than a number from one to ten

Resources: A pirates’ chest made from a large box with a lid; 10 large coins cut from gold card.

Key vocabulary: Less, more, numbers to ten, how many?

Organisation: Small groups.

What to do: Tell the children that they are pirates who have just found treasure. Show the children the pirates’ chest. Ask the children what they think might be in the chest. Open it and together take out and count the coins. Ask a child to put two coins back in the chest. Close the lid and ask how many coins are in the chest. Establish that there are two. Put in one more and close the lid. Ask how many coins are in the chest now. Repeat the activity several times with different starting numbers of coins. Encourage the children to shut their eyes and imagine the coins in the chest, before they open the lid and check.
